Coursera for free or cheap.

Financial Aid is a fee waiver. If approved, you pay nothing for that course: full access to graded work and the same certificate paid learners get. It's not a loan. Nothing to repay.

✅ Covers

  • Individual courses
  • Each course inside a Professional Certificate (Google, Meta, IBM and more), one application per course

🚫 Doesn't cover

  • Coursera Plus subscription
  • Full degree programs
  • Courses that don't show the aid link at all

How to do it

  1. 1

Log in to Coursera and open the course you want.

  2. 2

Near the Enroll button, find the small "Financial aid available" link and tap it. No link? That course doesn't offer aid.

  3. 3

Fill in the background questions: education, employment, annual income, how much you can pay. Answer honestly.

  4. 4

Write your two answers: why you need aid, and how this course helps your goals. Coursera needs at least 150 words each. Use the Answer Builder below to plan them.

  5. 5

Agree to the Honor Code and submit.

  6. 6

Wait for the decision email. Coursera says up to 16 days. Check your spam folder too.

  7. 7

Once approved, enroll and start. You get 180 days to finish, or you'll need to apply again.

⚠️ Watch out

  • Don't start a Coursera Plus free trial while your application is pending. It cancels your application.
  • Don't copy someone else's answers. Template answers are easy for reviewers to spot and get rejected.
  • Rejected? The email says why. Fix that, add specific details about your situation and goal, and reapply.

💡 Tips

  • Professional Certificates: apply for course 2 while you finish course 1, so you never wait.
  • While you wait, you can often preview or audit the course for free (videos, no certificate).

Answer Builder

Write your two Financial Aid answers.

This tool helps you write your answers. Everything you write should be true. Coursera reads each application, so honest, specific answers work best.

Answer 1 · 1 of 11

Answer 1 · "Why are you applying for Financial Aid?"

Golden rules

Five rules that keep you safe.

  1. 1Only use official platform pages. Never give your password to any "free course" site.
  2. 2Be honest on every form. These are honor-code declarations, and false info can get your account blocked.
  3. 3Write answers in your own words. Copied answers get rejected.
  4. 4One course at a time. Finish it, then apply for the next.
  5. 5Set reminders for deadlines (180 days on Coursera, trial end dates).
